Siena is a small city, easily explored on foot and there are a lot of parking spaces . Suggested visits : Piazza del Campo with the Torre del Mangia and the Public Palace, the Cathedral, where you can admire the works of Michelangelo and Donatello. The Museum of the Opera del Duomo, Palazzo Chigi, the Civic Museum, The Museum Complex of Santa Maria della Scala, the Sanctuary and the house of St. Catherine. The attractions of the Museum of the Water and all the museums of the " Contrade " which open in turns every other Saturday. In the city you can find the headquarters of Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472 and considered the oldest bank in the world.

The Palio of Siena

The Palio of Siena takes place every year in July and August and last s four days . It is one of oldest popular festivals in the world. There are seventeen "Contrade" or neighborhoods altogether. Each district is allocated into specific areas belonging to the territory of this lovely city . The Palio consists of a horse race between only ten of these " Contrade " around the Piazza del Campo . Although it is very challenging, it is nevertheless an exciting moment for the Siennese to cheer at their own "Contrada" during the whole race while all the tourists join in, too. By walking through the streets of Siena you can easily realize in which Contrada you are b y observing the flags or the emblems displayed along the streets of belonging.
